Brief analysis relating to Mana Hashimoto

  • Process and improvisation structures draw on concepts of touching, embodying an experience and/or visual imagery as stimuli to create movement material. These techniques are shared with Mana Hashimoto, a Japanese dance artist who provides workshops which aim to “develop the awareness on the senses such as smell, touch, sounds without using the sight information, researching the movements hidden in human bodies.”
  • Hashimoto lost her sight in 1998 and explores and shares movement using her other senses. Reference points took the foundation of her concepts and transposes them into other environments to develop the idea in alternative directions – seeking to discover the possibilities of how our bodies move without visual factors, such as visual imagery, spatial awareness and body awareness through touch and sound, awareness of our exterior and interior atmosphere/experience.
  •  Our resulting movement material was developed through using this concept in improvisation experiments then choreographed with composition considered. Material is mainly constructed from original improvisation – which demonstrates instinctive responses to experiments.
  •            Progress and exploration was very productive and efficient – meaning that instinctive movement came naturally, therefor work was produced quickly.
